ELPO attorneys speaking on immigration law at conference

Attorneys Brett Reynolds and Heather Coleman are speaking at the Kentucky Society of Human Resources Management conference in September on the topic of I-9 Compliance.

Their presentation is entitled “I-9 Compliance and the Unlawful Employment of Foreign Nationals.” The conference is set for Sept. 23 to 25 in Louisville at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville. Their session is set for 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23, the first day of the conference.

In the flutter of activity that encompasses the hiring process, innocent mistakes can be made with regard to employment verification.  Immigration law is presently one of the most publicized issues in the United States, and employers of all sizes are being affected.  This presentation will provide HR professionals with a better understanding of an employer’s I-9 compliance responsibilities in light of the dynamic and complex immigration regulations.  Tips for avoiding both civil and criminal penalties as well as best practices for proper recordkeeping and the development of effective policies and procedures for employment verification will also be addressed.

Human resources professionals who attend the workshop will hear a summary of the basics of immigration law and rules on hiring foreign nationals, common problems with I-9 forms, overview of penalties for noncompliance and best practices for recordkeeping. Brett Reynolds and Heather Coleman will discuss how to develop policies and procedures to help minimize an employer’s risk.
